The weekend afterEarth Garden, 4 – 6 June

This isn’t really a birthday party. It’s an excuse to get the people from every chapter of my life onto one small island at the same time: the ones who knew me at school, the ones from each city since, the ones who’ve only ever heard about each other. Forty is just the date. Tell me when you land and when you leave, and I’ll fit the rest around who’s here.

The plan

Not going all out. Two fixed evenings, then a boat and a hike slotted in once I know who’s on the island and when. The festival the weekend after is there for anyone staying on.

02

Where to stay

Malta is tiny: nowhere is more than 40 minutes from anywhere. Base yourself in one of these three and you’ll be close to everything. Book early, the island fills up.

Valletta

Closest to everything

The capital. Honey-coloured limestone, baroque streets, wine bars in old palazzos, and the harbour at the end of every road. Small boutique hotels in converted townhouses, mostly.

  • [Hotel name], my first pick
  • [Hotel name], good value
  • Floriana next door: cheaper, a ten-minute walk

Sliema & St Julian’s

Most hotels, most nightlife

The seafront strip across the harbour from Valletta. Bigger hotels, rooftop pools, a five-minute ferry to the capital. St Julian’s is louder; Sliema is calmer.

  • [Hotel name], right on the water
  • [Hotel name], if you want a pool
  • Plenty of apartments on the usual sites

Gozo

If you’re staying longer

The quieter sister island, 25 minutes by ferry. Farmhouses with pools, empty coast, very slow pace. Brilliant for a few extra days, less ideal as a base for the Friday.

  • Rent a farmhouse in Għarb or Xagħra
  • Fast ferry from Valletta to Mġarr harbour

Good to know

Flights
Everyone flies into Malta International (MLA). Direct from London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Dublin, Rome and most European hubs. Around three hours from the UK.
Airport
Twenty to thirty minutes to town in a cab. Bolt and eCabs both work; fixed-fare taxis at the airport too. You do not need to hire a car.
Plugs
UK-style three-pin sockets, type G. Brits: leave the adapter at home. Everyone else: bring one.
Money
Euros. Cards everywhere, but keep a little cash for the boat and the kiosks.
Language
Maltese and English, both official. You’ll be fine.
Weather
Late May is warm, mid-twenties by day, cooler at night. The sea is around 20°C: swimmable, not yet bathwater.
Getting around
Valletta to Sliema is a five-minute ferry. Buses are cheap and slow. Cabs are cheap and quick.
Gifts
None. Turning up and talking to people you’ve never met is the gift. If you insist, a bottle of something for the boat.
